In Defense of Reading

In Defense of Reading “I don’t read.”Whether I’m teaching English or test prep, I hear this statement from students again and again. When I find the rare student who delights in reading, I’m thrilled. But why the near-universal resistance to reading? We could look into the societal and technological factors that contribute to it, but these external factors are largely beyond our control. Besides, there are a few more practical questions we can consider.1) Why does it matter if students read?2) What can we do about it?Why read? The benefits of reading are manyfold. They range from the eminently practical to the obscurely big-picture.WritingWriting remains an essential skill for a successful professional career. Students must learn to unravel their own thoughts and articulate them clearly and succinctly. Learning to write well, however, is a challenge. Memorizing the structural aspects of a paragraph or overall essay is easy enough, but fine-tuning one’s grasp of vocabulary (including its conventi onal usage) and sentence structure is more elusive. Some things are learned best by sheer osmosis: read enough books, read enough sentences, and you’ll eventually develop your own voice. Students consciously, or unconsciously, mimic what they see and hear and read.Standardized TestsAt the very least, most students will face the SAT or ACT before they move beyond their high school careers. Some will encounter the ISEE, the HSPT, or the SSAT as they transition to high school. Whether digesting a math word problem or working through a reading comprehension passage, students rely on skills accrued by practice and more practice. Students often prepare for these tests in the preceding months, but good reading habits developed over the course of years give students the foundation they need to succeed. A student who has read regularly will pick up instinctively on the nuances of reading passages, understand what sounds grammatically “correct,” and interpret word problems.CreativityRea ding exposes us to other perspectives, to other worlds, to our own history, to what is, to the possibility of what could be. Exercising our imaginations spurs creativity and, by extension, innovation.  In today’s ever-changing world, creativity is essential. How can we encourage reading?Students regularly tell us, “It was boring” when asked what they thought about a book. So how do we help students find the joy in reading?Emphasize Quality over QuantityTell a student to read a hundred pages a day, and they’ll skim the pages at best, skip the exercise entirely at worst. Why? It’s a task, and it’s an overwhelming one at that. A student will benefit more from reading 5 pages a day well than a hundred sloppily. We can’t influence the assignments students receive in school, but if we’re encouraging outside reading or asking students to examine a text more closely, we can start small. If a student has a fifty pages to read for school, ask them to choose a passage no longer than two pages to examine more in depth.Active ReadingA surefire way to ensure you’ll be bored with a text is not to think about it. Imagine tha you read the lines, “There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Hamlet is telling Horatio that he hasn’t thought of everything. So what? This is the question that we so often ignore: so what? Students breeze their way through passages without pausing to consider the events, without taking note of anything that stood out to them, and without contemplating the “why” of the text.We can encourage students to check in with themselves after each paragraph or after every chapter. What do they think about what they read? How do they feel about it? What are one or two things they noticed that they feel are significant, and why? Was there anything that surprised them? Alarmed them? Made them smile? The more a student engages with a text, the more it means to them. The more they notice, the most interesting the text can seem.ConnectionsFor many students, the books they read have no connection to their daily lives. The existential dilemmas of a Danish prince who must contend with the duplicity of his uncle and mother is not a situation that many students can relate to. Asking students to explain how they feel about characters opens avenues to forming connections. If they like the character, what do they like about them? If they dislike them, what do they dislike? If a student can connect with a character, they’ve taken strides towards connecting to the book.Furthermore…The themes of a book often apply to today’s world, no matter when the book was written. The theme of society’s obsession with outward appearances can describe the experiences of Anna in Anna Karenina as well as today’s world of social media. Students’ understanding of their world not only informs their understanding of Anna’s world, but also gives the book meaning in their own lives. They c an examine the relevancy of Tolstoy’s message now as well as then. What can we do to help?AJ’s English tutors are experts at asking leading questions to not only guide students into a deeper understanding of the text, but also help them find the connections that make a text resonate with them. Whether we’re working with an acronym such as OPERATICA (Observe, Predict, Evaluate, React, Ask, Translate, Infer, Connect, Analyze) to assist with annotation or guiding students organically through translating their initial impressions into something deeper, we believe in teaching students the process, not the answer. We’re interested in a student’s ideas and where they can take them, not with our own interpretation of the text.  Our goal is to empower our students to master a text on their own and to inspire them to keep reading.

10 ways to prepare your child for primary school

10 ways to prepare your child for primary school The first day at primary school is a landmark in every child's life. Here are some ways you can help your child make the transition from home/ nursery school to primary school: 1. If any of your friends have children starting at the same school, see if you can arrange a few 'playdates' before school starts - that way, your child will already have friends. 2. Encourage your child's independence by teaching them to dress themselves and look after their own possessions. 3. Lead by example: be enthusiastic and positive when you talk to your child about school. 4. If your child has older siblings or cousins, encourage them to tell your child positive things about starting school. 5. Teach your child about school etiquette, such as sharing, taking turns, and raising their hand to ask a question. 6. Get to know the school, and its staff, as well as you can. Attend parent-teacher meetings, inductions, social events and anything else that helps you build relationships with the people who will be taking charge of your child's early education. 7. Find storybooks about starting school and read them to your child. 8. Make sure you inform the school if your child has any allergies, special needs or medical issues. 9. Take your child with you when you go shopping for their uniform. Let them try it on and explain to them that this is what big boys and girls wear when they go to school. 10. Don't voice any concerns about the school in front of your child. Talk to a partner or friend about anything that's bothering you in private.

Breaking Good

Breaking Good Well my wife just got back from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, where she needed some thing for the shower or something like that. She told me how the store was full of parents and students from one of the private colleges in town. It was called back to the dorm day for some reason. The reason she brought this up is because she found several of the mothers, and I use that term any way you want to take it, were a bit on the aggressive side. She was pushed and shoved and glared at in line, as apparently these parents saw my wife as one more obstacle to over come. Get out of my way its back to school day in sin city. There is some good news for this educational season. Many students may now be willing to explore Chemistry courses, in their educational travels. The series Breaking Bad showed a desperate and ill high school chemistry teacher turning to manufacturing Crystal Meth as a means to supplement health care costs and provide for his family. It was such a crazy premise that it worked very well. The show was a hit and more students are interested in chemistry than ever before. Well parents welcome to the jungle of preparing your child/children for a new school year. But before you do the kids are going back to school dance, you will have to take them out for their supplies and new school clothes. Shopping with younger children can be an adventure, but taking older, college level kids out shopping can be a real nightmare too. One way around that is to give them a credit card with a strict limit to it and let them have at it. Because some of these stores, especially in the big city, with their back to school sales can be the survival of the fittest. Another important aspect of getting ready for the new school year is to honestly ask the question is your child ready for the next grade level?. If they had a bit of trouble with some of their assignments or subjects last year, you can be sure they will have even more trouble this year. Many students from elementary age on up have trouble with math and sciences. My kids did, as did I, when I found myself going back to school. The weakest area of the typical American student is in these categories. I noticed, in my own experience as an older student returning to school pursuing a Computer Science degree, was the farther along I got in the advanced math courses, the smaller the class size. Not popular subjects in America Im afraid. In fact the sad truth is that we have to bring engineers and scientist in from other countries to makeup for our lack of producing our own home grown ones. So if your child has trouble with math, they are not alone. The main thing that saved me was, a tutor. I needed someone who could translate what the professor was saying into terms I could grasp. When I sat down with a quality tutor before class I had an understanding that I could not have achieved on my own. And at the college level professors do not often have the time for one on one work with students. You can find whatever you are looking for in a tutor at TutorZ.com. And good luck to all in this new school year. Breaking Good Well my wife just got back from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, where she needed some thing for the shower or something like that. Verbal Reasoning. What is it and why is it important

Verbal Reasoning. What is it and why is it important When we hear the words 'Verbal Reasoning' our minds automatically jump to the eleven plus tests that school children sit in various parts of England for a place at a grammar school. But Verbal Reasoning is not just used for the eleven plus. It is also used by many employers to test the skills of their prospective employees and by many graduate training schemes to distinguish between applicants. What is Verbal Reasoning? Verbal Reasoning is basically about the way we think with words. It is a form of understanding and reasoning concepts based around words and language. It involves: problem-solving around words thinking about text following written instructions and deciphering a solution understanding letter sequences decoding letter and number-based codes Verbal reasoning tests judge a person's ability for problem-solving, critical and constructive thinking and general intelligence. There are many different types of verbal reasoning questions including: Insert a letter, where you must find a letter that will fit onto the end of one word and the beginning of another to form two new words. Find words that do not belong in a set group of words. Find words that have the same, similar or opposite meaning. Find hidden words within a sentence. Work out which number stands for which letter. Word connections Letter and number sequences. Reading information and analysis. And many more. Verbal reasoning is something that can be improved with practice and dedication. Verbal Reasoning Examples Let's take a look at a few different examples of verbal reasoning and how the answers are based on logically working out what is being asked: 1. If A = 4 B = 6 C = 7 D = 30 E = 13 What is C + A + E + B = Answer = D (Simply add up the numbers represented by the letters and the answer is 30; represented by the letter D) 2. Gerry's dad Mike is three times as old as Gerry was 2 years ago. If Gerry is 17 next year, how old is his dad? Answer = 42 (If Gerry is 17 next year that would make him 16, meaning he was 14 two years ago. 143 = 42). 3. If the code for the word YACHT is BZXSG What is the word for NLZGH? Answer = MOATS (This is a simple matter of working out the relationship between the letters. You will notice that Y is to B as A is to Z and C is to X. You should now be able to spot that the first letter of the alphabet transforms to the last letter of the alphabet, the second letter to the second to last letter, the third letter to the third last letter and so on. In this way we are able to work out that the words NLZGH is actually MOATS. You can also check this as two of the letters in the first coded word are also in the second coded word, A and T, so you only have to work out the other three.) 4. Read the following passage and decide which statement is true. On Saturday Olly, Jim and Christian like to go to the cinema. In the cinema Olly likes to buy popcorn and Jim always gets something to drink. Christian sometimes gets some sweets but will always get what Jim gets too. A. The boys go to the cinema every Saturday. B. Popcorn is the cheapest to buy. C. Christian doesn't have much money. D. Christian always gets a drink. E. Jim is the richest one. The answer is D. (These questions are simply a matter of elimination and again, logic. The statement states clearly that Christian always gets what Jim gets and Jim always gets something to drink. Therefore the only answer that is certain is D). 5. AB is to CD As EF is to = Answer = GH (The letters are a continuation of each other in the alphabet) 6. Which number comes next in the sequence? 12 6 16 10 20 14 (?) Answer = 24 (If you look at the numbers you will notice a pattern. Taking the first, third and fifth numbers they all progress by adding four each time. Then taking the second, fourth and sixth numbers also progress by adding four each time. Therefore the seventh number would just be four more that the fifth number). As we can see the answers to the questions are based on logic. It's a simple matter of being able to think about what the question is asking and logically working out the answer. There is always a logical sequence, pattern or observation that can be seen; it is just a matter of being able to work it out. The Importance of Verbal Reasoning Verbal Reasoning is important both in a child's academic life and their adult lives. Developing their verbal reasoning skills will allow them to become socially independent and succeed in their professional life later on. Having Verbal Reasoning skills will allow your child to develop qualities such as perception, understanding and solving complicated subject questions, empathy and logical reasoning as well as ensuring they have a great vocabulary. So what do children need to succeed at verbal reasoning tests? Author of Learning Together practice books, Stephen McConkey, states on the website The School Run: Children perform best in verbal reasoning tests if they're widely read and have an extensive vocabulary... They need a solid grasp of synonyms (words that have the same meaning), antonyms (words that mean the opposite of each other) and plurals, good spelling skills, and strong maths skills. A good general knowledge is also needed for verbal reasoning tests...Even if your child understands the question and can follow the written directions, if one of the possible words in the answer is unfamiliar, they may trip up. One of the best ways to encourage your child to develop their verbal reasoning skills is to encourage them to read. Reading will not only increase their vocabulary but they will learn to interpret words and understand comprehension. Other ways to help your child develop their verbal reasoning skills are: Play word games; understanding synonyms and antonyms, spotting odd words out and finding word replacements. Word searches and crosswords are a great way for your child to spot new words and find answers to riddles. Spelling tests don't have to be boring and tedious! Challenge your child to learn ten new words per week and test them. Have a small reward for when they achieve their goals. Encourage your child to write stories; these could be anything from something they have done or would like to do, creative fiction based on a book they have read or strange and mysterious tales using their imagination. Improve their general knowledge; learn interesting facts together, visit museums, play science games, take nature walks... there are plenty of ways to teach your child something new. Improve their logic skills by asking them simple questions for them to work out. Private Tutors are often employed to aid in the learning of Verbal Reasoning. Many tutors have great ways of explaining complex problems to children in a simple, fun and easy-to-understand way. To Conclude Some children are naturally very good at verbal reasoning whilst others require more practice and a helping hand. Whatever the case, your child will need verbal reasoning throughout their school days and on into adulthood. Encourage your child to develop their verbal reasoning skills through games, trips and simple tasks at home. This will not only aid them in their academic life but will build up their logic skills, and of course plenty of other skills, for when they grow up.

How Chirality is Related to Organic Chemistry

How Chirality is Related to Organic ChemistryChirality Organic Chemistry is one of the five categories of organic chemistry. Its research is related to the nature of matter, atomic structure, and the way atoms move in the matter. Chirality Organic Chemistry studies how matter has an intrinsic rotation of its plane. In other words, the symmetry of molecules may be expressed by the aspect ratio and the plane normal to it.Chirality of molecules is important in the way matter is structured. If you know what chirality means, you know that the atoms have the same number of electrons as the protons, neutrons, and electrons in their nucleus. Every atom has two faces, just like a mirror. An atom with the left face facing the current is said to be chiral while the one with the right face facing the current is said to be conchiral.Chirality in molecules also has another implication - it determines the way they move. For example, water molecules in an electrolyte (something made of ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and so on) moves at the same speed (if the atoms are equal in size) in both directions. But if water molecules have a low chirality - having three electrons in the atomic nucleus and the rest being either neutrons or electrons - then they move at different speeds (at right angles to each other), and thus there is a tendency for them to move in the same direction.Chirality is very important in how the molecules interact with the environment. In fact, the molecular chirality can also be considered a component of the environmental context - particles move in a way that may be dependent on this component. For example, the metal ions ionize and become negatively charged; if their chirality is high, the ionized area's shift to the right in the atomic lattice, and the ions in the material move rightwards.Chirality has another consequence as well. In the field of medicine, the chirality of the atoms that make up your body can determine which tissue structures the body will develop and which ones you will die from.In addition, chirality has consequences for the chemical properties of the things around us. For example, the chirality of carbon atoms in a piece of graphite acts as a gas in an atmosphere; when the atoms of carbon have a low chirality, the atoms are at least 10 times less dense than the ordinary ones, and when they have a high chirality, the atoms are several times denser. Carbon does not lend itself to the formation of diamond or other crystalline substances; instead, they form carbonates and other oxides, which are the compounds in oceans, seas, and lakes.Chirality is also associated with the way life is formed. As the chirality is high, there is a tendency for the starting material (like hydrogen or carbon) to break down into more stable compounds. In fact, the formation of nuclei in stars requires a high chirality in the amino acids that give rise to them, because otherwise there would be too much variation between the nuclei . Thus, the role of chirality in nature was the subject of a lot of speculation before its importance was understood.

Why Is Physical Chemistry So Hard To Determine? Discover How To Change The Game!

Why Is Physical Chemistry So Hard To Determine? Discover How To Change The Game! One of the most common questions asked by dating and relationship experts, coaches and personal trainers around the world is 'Why is physical chemistry so hard to determine?' The question seems to come from a place of insecurity. So we begin to answer this question by knowing that everyone has a different level of physical attraction towards another person.Personal chemistry is actually a very hard to study for because not all men and women experience it the same way or even at the same time. Some people will come into contact with someone who makes them feel physically attracted to them and then will not be able to get over it and the result is they will never form an emotional connection with that person. This is a problem that most people are unable to overcome and it is a reason why women will look for someone 'whose' way of looking at you is different from their own. This is the first step in learning to take advantage of what attracts you and make your way to the person you are ready to date. We may not see it at the beginning, but after a while, you are going to find that those kinds of things are what will work for you will no longer worry about why is physical chemistry so hard to determine. You will be the one in control and not the other way around. The second question asked is 'Why is physical chemistry so hard to control?' The answer to this question comes down to two major factors, the ability to communicate with your guy and the willingness to let him control you. When you have a relationship where you feel like he has control over you, you become more nervous than you want to be. Most guys simply do not like a woman who is not dependent on them. When you feel that you have to prove yourself to him, you can tell yourself that you cannot do anything right and this is exactly what you want.Women often do not like the feeling of being controlled by someone because of the ph ysical chemistry that exists between a man and a woman. In order to ensure that you can take control of this, you need to have a man who believes in you and your happiness. If you have a man who gives you respect and also says things that you find extremely sexy, this will assure that the relationship you have is one that both of you will cherish. This is a simple explanation why is physical chemistry so hard to determine. The fact of the matter is that no matter how hard you try to discover a reason why it is so hard to determine, you can never avoid the fact that there is just something special about you.
